How stratospheric flights work
A stratospheric balloon flight is a controlled mission in which a capsule carrying a payload and cameras rises to over 30 km – to the edge of space. Below we show exactly how such a flight unfolds: from preparation, through launch and the balloon burst at altitude, to capsule recovery and handing over the recorded material.
How the flight unfolds – step by step
- Preparation and planning – we analyse the wind forecast, plan the route and the predicted landing site, complete aviation formalities and report the flight to the relevant authorities.
- Payload integration – we mount your payload inside the capsule together with the cameras, transmitter and telemetry system. Everything is tested before launch.
- Inflation and launch – the balloon is filled with helium or hydrogen; after launch it climbs at around 5 m/s.
- Ascent through the atmosphere – the capsule passes through the troposphere into the stratosphere. The outside temperature drops below -50°C and the pressure falls to a fraction of the value at ground level.
- Peak altitude and balloon burst – at 30-38 km the balloon expands to over ten metres in diameter and bursts. This is the moment of the most spectacular footage: the blackness of space and the curvature of the Earth.
- Descent under a parachute – after the burst the capsule descends on a parachute that slows it down to a safe landing speed.
- Capsule recovery – we track its position in real time via GPS and radio; after landing we reach the capsule and secure it.
- Handing over the material – we download the recordings and flight data, then hand over the recorded material together with your payload.

How long does a flight take
The ascent and descent themselves usually take 2-4 hours. On top of that come the pre-launch preparations and the drive to the landing site and capsule recovery. We hand over the recordings and data after the capsule has been recovered.

Every flight is carried out in line with aviation regulations and reported to the relevant institutions. Route selection, the wind forecast and a parachute matched to the capsule’s mass minimise the risk. We take care of all the formalities.
